Rear Curtain, together with the Port Townsend Arts Commission and the Northwind Arts Center, are very pleased to announce the I Have a Name Exhibit by Raymond Ketcham running from now until February 26, 2017.
Photographers often embark on projects as a way to delve into more meaningful work. Few however are able to successfully immerse themselves in the subject and to have the empathy of understanding reflected in their photographs. Almost five years ago Ray Ketcham approached the Board of the Boiler Room in Port Townsend, Washington and sought permission to photograph there. He wanted to see why this particular youth-oriented community center was still successful after 20 years of service. The result of his work is a series of documentary and large-format portraits that seize the imagination of the viewer and take them along on the journey with these individuals as they seek to know themselves.
Instead of being a fly on the wall and asking patrons and workers at the Boiler Room to just ignore him, Raymond Ketcham asked them if he could become a part of their lives and then went on to build a relationship with the people he met there. When asked what he learned from this time there, Ketcham replied: “Real change in this world starts locally and in the hands of those invested in their own community. It moves out from where it begins into the much broader world. What the Boiler Room does is invest in individuals through community and in community through individuals. The respect and sense of responsibility at the Boiler Room spreads from there into the world at large as the patrons and volunteers grow and move on. I, for one, believe it is making the world a better place for all of us.
The show will officially open with a reception on February 4, 2017 at the Northwind Arts Center, 701 Water Street, Port Townsend. For photographers and others who are interested in learning more about this work, Raymond Ketcham will be doing an Art Talk there on February 5, 2017 at 1pm.
